- In a pressure cooker heat the oil, add cumin seeds and asafetida and fry them for 2 to 3 minutes or until they become brown. Now, add the onion when they till golden brown and add tomato, green chilli, turmeric powder, red chilli Powder, water and Salt to taste. Mix well them.
- Place the lid on pressure cooker and close it and let the khichdi stand for 1whistle. If khichdi looks little watery, do not cook to dry the water, because rice and dal absorb lot of moisture. Ready to serve with curd, mango pickle and papad.
I use toor dal which is my preferred dal variety for Dal khichdi; its easy to digest and also cooks quickly. I've also used basmati here although any short grain rice would be good too.
